Thanks to Liz Bentz for having me come and present my astrology workshop. Liz is the second Aquarian library program director who's wanted the astrology, and for my money there's no trendspotter as acute as a watercarrier.

Nice group of folks -- NO earth signs and mostly born between Scorpio and Pisces. At one point, the 2 Scorpio people were looking at me in the EXACT same way (amused/skeptical) -- these 2 folks did not know each other....

It's really fun presenting "the basics" about the 12 signs and having the Elizabethan lore woven in. When you know Shakespeare would have called you melancholic (water signs) or choleric (fire signs) or sanguine (air signs) or bilious (earth signs) there's comfort to be had. Tatnuck was fun. I had calendars and almanacs and offered one of my guests the opportunity to have her calendar PERSONALIZED w/good and difficult days. (+ and - on the days). Sold some books, and was on Christina Andropolous's City Vibes show which airs to Charter 3 audiences in Worc. County.

So...the book is available at all the usual places nationwide PLUS in my car. This week's fun impromptu sale: to Chriztine Foltz who, with husband Tom Alonzo was eating a backwards seafood dinner at Conrad's in Lunenburg (ice cream first). I got to sell a book PLUS got to finish their steamers for them :-)

I will be at the Westminster Farmers' Market selling puppets, jewelry, handmadethisandthat plus THE ASTROLOGICAL ELEMENTS. That's Friday from 3 to 7 pm. Hopefully nicer than now as it's hot enough to cook steamers on the top of this monitor....

Had to postpone my visit with Christina at CITY VIBES, due to a truly diabolical stomach bug that came home with my son and laid waste many previously-made plans. Llewellyn asked me to contribute a BLOG entry to their site. I wrote about Reading Aloud to folks in bookstores, which is v. fun particularly if someone gets me a cup of good coffee ahead of time.

Barnes & Noble signing/reading was VERY fun! Got to see old friends, former writing class students and hear what's new with them AND met lotsa new folks, many of whom had read the Telegram piece!

Just rec'd email from Jennifer at Llewellyn, entree to the world of the PODCAST!! Have done radio and of course am on WCRN every Monday but a chunk o'time to talk about the book.

Also did a reading in the B&N Cafe. Some people not in our group seemed to listen. It was slightly easier than the Gibson's reading, during which time Jet decided if I was going to talk SHE was going to talk, and talk LOUDER! Note to self: the baby at the reading better be sleeping.

The syndicated astrology columnist and author will be at Gibson's Bookstore on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. to talk about her new book The Astrological Elements: How Fire, Earth, Air and Water Influence Your Life. Grouping the 12 astrological signs into categories based on the four elements, the book attempts to give people direction in their work and personal relationships.

"I think most people are responding to the chapters about bosses and employees," Cragin said via e-mail.

That boss from hell may just be a fire sign boss (Aries, Sagittarius, Leo): "They'll expect some initiative from you, but chances are they may lose interest in exactly how your project turns out," Cragin said. And that weepy employee may be one of the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), who, by the way, have some real strengths when put in authority. "Water sign bosses will be sensitive, no matter how high up the food chain they are," Cragin said. "At their best, they can sympathize with the worker against 'the man.' At their worst, they're untrustworthy and moody."

Cragin will be at Gibson's when the moon is waxing and in the sign of Virgo, which rules health, work and service, she said.

The FIRST official reading for TAE was at Gibson's Bookstore in Concord, NH. Thank you Michael and Deb for setting this up. It was great to see classmates Becky and John and to meet so many members of my cousin Susan's writing group (Romance writers and Bow writers). I am exceedingly grateful to Susan because Jet wasn't sure what to make of the reading process, in that if I am holding HER I need to be talking to HER not these people she doesn't know who are sitting on folding chairs looking hopeful and expectant!

So Susan took small, thrashy wailing child out in the sun and apparently Jet calmed down whenever a doggie went by.

As for the reading -- I am used to extemporizing from text, from teaching college classes, but I found it was WAY better to stick to a chapter and just READ it. I touched on all 12 signs/4 elements frequently and at one point, giving the historical overview, I mentioned my uncle Jim who was a space physicist at Goddard Labs for NASA (he was of the opinion that since we can't DISPROVE astrology as it's connected to astronomy we have to keep an open mind. Which is a very purescience way to go and much appreciated by me through the years) .Anyway, as soon as I mentioned that, a lady in the front row said is that Jim TRAINOR? I said yes, and she said she was Barbara Lowrie who'd worked at NASA at the same time. She was SUPER helpful when the question came about Pluto and it's recent dismissal as an official member of the solar system. I knew Pluto had an odd eliptic (in that it crossed paths with Uranus) which was one of the arbiters along with its being tiny, but it was good to hear from a real SPACE PHYSICIST on this front. She said her 5 year old grandson was OUTRAGED that Pluto wasn't a real planet and couldn't discuss it.

Anyway, I found Pluto helpful in chart reading just as the little rock got downgraded, and said as much. Pluto in Capricorn has accompanied this economic disaster/malaise, so we're in for a ride for the next 27plus years (counting rx's). Nice to see Harvard X friend Anne Farma too! I definitely got the sense from this reading that the point of doing readings/appearances was to put your presence in the store and that other people who weren't in the store looking at my book at THAT very minute would, at some point in the future walk in.

At least that's my hope!

I was interviewed in William Loeb's paper this Sunday! Hopefully this will carry over to the reading at Gibson's Books on April 24. I got a salescall from someone today offering me a "precious laminated version of this keepsake event," which is a first. The last time I was given a piece of laminated newspaper it contained my beloved grandfather's obituary. I think I was entertaining in the interview and I STILL can't find it online ....Anyway here's what I sent. I'm sure there's an intro-graph that was put on and this copy has probably been edited but here's the raw copy from moi:

1. How did you get interested/started in astrology?

Born in 1960, I was at the perfect impressionable age so that when Beatlemaniac aunts turned to the literature of the Age of Aquarius I definitely got some good eavesdropping in. My grandmother, born 1914, Armenian emigrant parents was WAY into astrology. I don't think it's an Armenian thing so much as a need for my family to understand other people's motivations. Why do some people respond one way to stress or delight and others do not? Why are some people shy or self-doubting, and others need an audience? Coming from a large and sprawling family gave us plenty of data to work with, shall we say. My book, "The Astrological Elements" collects all my "wonderings" against the predictable and exciting tapestry of astrological archetypes.

2. What are some misconceptions people have about your field?

I can't say because I quickly disabuse folks at classes and workshops by saying, "okay, even if you don't know anything about astrology, can you tell me how you are EXACTLY like your sun sign?" Then we talk about the effect of the full moon which is prodigious and varied and absolutely cross cultural. Every small group of humans no matter where they are -- on a remote island, or a mountain ridge -- notices the moon has this craz-z-zy 29.5 or so day pattern. Which corresponds to shifts of behavior in all the mammals.

3. Where did you get the idea for the new book?

My husband, Chuck Warner suggested I write four books: one for each of the elements. My editor at Llewellyn thought it worked better as one volume and I have to agree because even one book takes a lot of time to write!

4. Were there any "surprises" in writing the book?

I wrote much of this book in December 2008. At the time, I was in my 2nd trimester with daughter Jet and on December 12, we had an ice storm in my part of Massachusetts that knocked out power for weeks. We were without power for 12 days, which was the time I had to finish the book. Chuck hooked us up a generator so I could run my PC and get most of it in shipshape and I finished in early January. I do not recommend writing a book while pregnant and without power in your house.

5. Can you give me an example of an interpersonal relationship where knowing people's signs helped work things out? I'm thinking of a teacher/student or boss/subordinate kind of thing. I think most people are already used to thinking "signs" with significant others; but if you have a great anecdote on that, please feel free to share.

I've worked in a variety of offices, which supplied a lot of interesting information for the "Working with sun signs" chapters. I've worked with smart, imaginative people who inspired you to do better and I've worked for slackers who don't know how to run a meeting, let alone conduct a business. I've noticed various patterns, depending on the element. Depending on the industry, with a fire sign boss (Aries, Sagittarius and Leo), they'll expect some initative from you and they may lack follow through or interest in how things turn out. But they'll always have new ideas. Earth sign bosses (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) can be great because they'll be consistent in expectation and keep an eye on the bottom line. I've had friends who've worked at places where they couldn't cash a check on time. That rarely happens with earth people at the helm (unless their chart is totally hinky). Air sign bosses (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra) generally don't stay in the same position for a long time, but it can happen. They can be imaginative, inconsistent and needing reminders as to what it is they decided. Water sign bosses (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) will, no matter HOW high up the food chain they are, always sympathize with the worker against "the man." They're amazingly emotionally flexible and I've known folks who have great loyalty towards their water (and earth) sign bosses.

...of orders, sales, readers. Have gotten some response trickling in but my work isn't the sort of thing that Publisher's Weekly or the NYT would be reviewing. Bad, bad mainstream press! When I was doing regular journalism I covered ANYTHING that caught my fancy. Sometime in the early 90s I found I was reading tons and tons of astrology books and folklore books and that sort of thing. For another person, they might fall down the rabbit hole and wind up with a masters' -- I ended up with a column, lovable clients, and some interesting freelance opportunities.

Fortunately, I can say with complete shamelessness it's a fun book to read and REALLY useful. I've divided the chapters into the 4 elements (fire, earth, air and water), and each element gets its 3 signs. And then I do mix/match so you can see how Virgo fares with Scorpio (ok) or Leo with Capricorn (magnetic, if Cappy can survive...). So something for everyone....

Have been skiing 3x in past week. I can see that publicizing this book will actually coincide with the end and postlude of ski season which is actually pretty convenient. I have a book. How completely freaky!

Fellow Libra News. I should have remembered Bode Miller was a Libra -- albeit in the Simon Cowell/Eminem flavor of Libra. Which is to say that in chaos, we find harmony, versus finding it in, you know, actual harmony. (Exception for Simon, who obviously does like harmony, but is an uncharacteristically outspoken Libra. Like Oscar Wilde, although I keep hoping he'll be a tiny bit wittier than he is. But I digress. Which is a Libra thing). Bode, like many other Libras is in the early stages of another @#$%^^& Saturn aspect; this one the Saturn conjunct solar aspect. Think back to 81-83, if you want a preview. I just really, really, really hope he pulls it out for the Olympics. He transcends it all...

Ok, article off AND THEN BACK, YEESH!! okay, off again. We just changed from c*mc*st to Veri$on and got a bunch of Your Mail was returned from folks and some the other way...

I don'tunderstandthe intranet, I really don't. 20plus years ago I'd hammer out my review of the rock band, walk the 1.5 miles to the Phoenix office, type it in on their system (because we'd already eliminated typesetters by then). Hang around while the editor smoked 10,000 cigarettes and had another 20,000 cups of coffee and jawed on the phone. Eventually tell said editor I HAVE TO GO NOW YOU WANT TO CALL ME WITH THE CHANGES? which would usually prompt some action, altho this editor was a CLASSIC Capricorn, e.g., notgonnamoverealfast not matter what. It seemed like a gigantic improvement to hammer out my review of the rock band on the 2-disc Epson PC I had, schlep said disk to the phoenix, input it into the editor's PC, follow next steps, rinse, repeat.

Somewhere along the line everything I do HERE shows up THERE. unless it doesn't. Aargh!! Well, I have written a humdinga of an article about TAE and the general ideas behind TAE which will be in their next newsletter which is actually a v. nice 4-color salestool. I need to request a GIGANTIC PILE of these as the peregrinations to SPREAD JOY about my book (buymybookbuymybook) begins.

There's a bakery next door to Gibson's in Concord NH. I love visiting Concord, and made my first foray up there during a presidential primary last time around. Gibson's has a wide range of quality reading material and I hope we can get some advance press happening so people are lined up.

New moon on Friday, so I may make more calls then, but from now until then, it's that accident-prone dark of the moon time which I've found finds me slightly uncoordinated when it comes to any outreach. I have a piece about the book due Monday for Llewellyn's in-house magazine which goes ALL over so v. happy about that.

80 years ago, if Virginia Woolf sold 5000 copies of something it was a runaway best-seller. And she wasn't "Virginia Woolf" back then. Not to compare myself with the foremost genius/stylist/avatar of text (how many writers ALSO were successful publishers?) but the scale of publishing is so different and so splintered. My book can be catalogued (and will be marketed) as new age self-help, and of course the "astrological" in the title puts it on another shelf. I'm hoping the "astrological" adjective is a selling point. When I found my interest in this topic piqued I couldn't read enough books about it. Now I've created my own and hopefully the general reading audience as well as the specialists will discover it and make it their own. My favorite books are literally falling apart and held together by rubber bands.

How do you do marketing and PR on a Sunday? I got so fired up after the Friday phone meeting I'm pedalling in place. Ok, I TOLD people in person about TAE :-) The Cronins have promised to come to the reading at B&N when it comes. Dan and I have the same birthday and were seated in adjoining seats throughout my three years at Lunenburg High School. He's calmed down A LOT and became a lawyer so his argumentative impulses are safely channelled. Heh. Since Saturn is in Libra from now through 2012, I keep track of him and his wife Jacquie (who's later on in the sign) to let them know what mischief the universe has in store.

I also told my two clients yesterday -- one asked the perfect lead-in questions. "I want to learn how to get along with Tauruses!" she said and I was able to say I have JUST the book for you!

I am off to Roots to see some nice ladies for my personal consultations. I should probably download info on my book so I am carrying it EVERYWHERE. At some point, I'll have a carton in the car.

Some updates: Called the local B&N who are eager to have me read and had the sensitivity to comment, "you'll probably want to pick out the date based on the astrological aspects," which made me smile. Generally putting-it-out-there efforts are best undertaken with a waxing moon phase, although I've had remarkable results with new moon stuff. Also emailed my friend Becky's husband who has a great bookstore in Concord, NH, Gibson's. Llewellyn will support efforts I make to get readings at bookstores and other venues by sending media material and setting up the shipping of books with their sales department.

When I told them I did have a lengthy and varied history with daily and weekly journalism outlets in the Boston area they suggested I reach out although they generally caution authors against contacting book reviewers directly. I commented that during my years at a rock critic it was very wearying to hear from bands about how great their band was. As Doug Simmons, my predecessor in Cellars by Starlight said, "if you're so great, someone else will tell me."

I mention this because the marketers at L. said they'd had authors "go rogue," and contact reviewers DIRECTLY. Knowing the infrequency of book review sections in the press and the glut of material that comes over, through and around the transom I have to agree.

That said, I was actually entertained by The Astrological Elements reading it post-partum, as it were. Here's an excerpt:

Chapter 2 – The Earth Element

Introduction

Earth signs are very likable. Not always lovable, because they're the element that often feels they have to “hold the line,” but certainly easy to get along with. They come in three flavors: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. And, yes, there's as much disparity among them as there are similarities. They combine well with one another and can even have lasting love relationships, but often someone with another element will bring out their hidden qualities.

Earth signs are renowned for their will and endurance. Yes, some would say stubbornness, and every earth sign I've ever known will admit (after the fact) that they are stubborn. You do not want to wrangle with them without a cohesive strategy laid out ahead of time. And for all their fondness for routine, they can be surprisingly capricious when it comes to “acting on whim.”

It's also a sign you don't want to rush. Let them move at their own pace, and figure things out on their own. Once they learn something, they know it well, but you can add to their feelings of insecurity by acting as if they need to be speed-demons when it comes to task completion.

She produces a very interesting show with a very interesting and surprising philosopher named Dr. Bob who's kind of the Zelig of pop-culture -- intersecting w/a variety of realms. He wrote an excellent and detailed book about the making of my favorite cartoon movie when Hal and I were kids: Yellow Submarine. I've been a guest on the show talking about astrology and taking calls from folks. They're based in Maryland and we wave on our way to Bethany Beach.
